Federal Group

Federal Group is Tasmania’s largest private sector employer, Australia’s longest-running hotel group and the operator of the country’s first legal casino. Over 2,000 employees span the group’s casino, gaming, tourism, hospitality, retail and transport sectors. With such a large size, efficient, reliable and trustworthy operations are paramount, particularly in alignment with the high regulations of the gaming industry.

Federal Group is no stranger to the dangers facing businesses in the 21st century after being the target of a ransomware attack in April 2021. The attack brought down many of its core business applications, including its financial systems, gaming systems and hotel check-in platforms.

‘We were more vulnerable than we had estimated. That would be one of the learnings. It’s not a matter of if, but when you are subject to cyber attackers.’ – Kent Bawden, IT Vendor Manager, Federal Group

Challenges

After the attack, Federal Group not only needed to restore its affected systems as soon as possible, but it also needed to improve its cybersecurity posture in order to be able to predict, respond to, and prevent future threats. They also needed to understand the full breadth of Azure Arc capabilities, envisioning how it looks in practice to keep their company secure in the cloud.

Results

Quorum’s work has brought such significant results for Federal Group that they’ve renewed the partnership for another year.

‘One of the things we’ve really liked about working with Quorum is that it feels more like a partnership than a sales pitch, and that’s critical to who we align with in the market,’ said Bawden. ‘They took a “what are you facing and what are you trying to achieve?” approach. Coupled with their team’s deep heritage and knowledge in the latest Microsoft technologies, it really fits the bill.’

Solutions

Quorum’s proprietary service, Cyber One, is a Managed Detection and Response Service launched in 2020, designed to provide support across the spectrum to customers with their Microsoft security strategy.

‘Cyber One is designed to help organisations of all sizes aggregate, monitor and respond to key security signalling available within Microsoft 365, Azure and beyond. It’s managed by a team of cybersecurity experts and is based on Microsoft Sentinel, which offers a cloud-first, flexible and scalable solution for our clients. It also leverages all of the defender products across both Microsoft 365 and Azure, and integrates Microsoft Graph Security API to give us richer data insights and improve the automation of our IT service management system.’ – Mark McLean, Managing Director, Quorum

Federal Group adopted Quorum’s Cyber One platform for its endpoint security and the Defender tool within the Microsoft stack, with the company already reaping the benefits of response times (MTTD and MTTR), seeing a significant reduction from hours to minutes.

  • Quorum has onboarded Federal Group’s entire fleet of approx. 1,000 endpoints and 100 servers on-premise and within Azure
  • The company’s Microsoft Secure Score has risen by over 50% within six months
  • Quorum’s Cloud and Infrastructure Services team are assisting with architecting and deploying Azure Arc, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s cybersecurity strategy
‘Critically, this has also allowed us to stay ahead of the tightening regulatory requirements experienced by the gaming sector, with full confidence that our organisation is far more secure than it has ever been.’ – Kent Bawden, IT Vendor Manager, Federal Group
