Azure is a form of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (Paas), forming a cloud computing service that provides essential compute, storage and networking resources on demand and on a pay-as-you-go basis.
When organisations migrate their infrastructure to an IaaS solution, they reduce maintenance of on-premises data centres, reduce hardware costs and build real-time business insights. IaaS solutions allow teams to scale IT resources up and down as demand requires, enabling the fast provision of new applications and increasing the reliability of underlying infrastructure without the need to maintain physical hardware.
Platform as a Service is a complete development and deployment environment that’s cloud-based, with resources that enable the execution of everything from simple cloud-based apps to nuanced and detailed cloud-enabled enterprise applications. Resources are purchased on a pay-as-you-go basis, with PaaS including infrastructure and middleware, development tools, business intelligence (BI) services, database management systems and more. PaaS enables teams to find support for a complete web application lifecycle. A number of Azure’s PaaS services include App Services, SQL, Azure Search and Azure CDN.
